Venice’s most prestigious race returns
Held on the fourth Sunday of every October, this year’s event falls on the 23rd and is the 31st edition. 8,000 runners will take to the streets of Venice across 42km of picturesque track. The event is very family friendly, with a mini marathon of 4km hosted the day before in a fun lead up to the big day.
A flat plain race to the finish line, the event starts in Stra in western Venice in front of the Villa Pisani. Upwards of 40,000 people attend the event every year in a race which crosses 14 bridges of Venice, including the Grand Canal, and towards the finish line in Riva Sette Martiri. Other landmarks you can catch a glimpse of over the course of the race are the Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale.
At present, Kenyan racers John Komen and Helena Kirop hold the fastest times for men and women respectively. The event is widely celebrated across all of Venice, many hotels acknowledging its popularity by offering rooms and services to racers participating. Don’t miss the race which everyone will be talking about over the penultimate weekend of October.
