Some of the most popular pastries in the country!


Italian pastries come in all shapes, sizes and flavours, with some created as a quick snack for the sweet tooth and others more indulgent. Here are a few pastries to look out for and suggestions on how and when to eat them:


Cannoli – originating from Sicily, these fried goodies are made from dough and filled with ricotta, typically topped with a cherry. A variety of toppings can be added, the most popular choice being chocolate chips. Cannoli are a very popular breakfast pastry.


Panettone – typically a Christmas staple originally from Milan. The sweet bread loaf is traditionally dotted with raisins and candied fruit.


Sfogliatelle – from Naples, the pastry is a thin and crispy dough filled with slightly sweetened ricotta or cream. Sfogliatelle is a lighter take on cannoli with unique shape, texture and pattern.


Cantucci – Tuscany’s favourite biscotti. These twice-baked treats have a crunchy texture and subtle almond flavour. They are usually served with Vin Santo, an Italian dessert wine or alongside a cup of tea or coffee.
