Guide to Verona

Fair Verona, the centrepiece of the Giovanni Rana story. Mr Giovanni first learnt the secret ingredient for the perfect pasta in his mamma’s kitchen in Veronella - passion! In San Giovanni Lupatoto, a little town just south of Verona, Mr Giovanni began hand-delivering his homemade pasta to local Veronese families on his red scooter.

Why go? There is more to Verona than pasta. For those lusting after the promise of eternal love, stop by the centuries-old Casa di Giulietta, or Juliet’s balcony. Legend goes that sticking a love note on the walls of the courtyard will bring forth your mystery Romeo.

Not just a setting for romantic fiction, Verona offers a delight of well-preserved ancient ruins. The awe inspiring Roman amphitheatre has dominated the town since it was built in the 1st Century AD and still to this day showcases a compelling line up of performances.

At the Corso Porta Borsari, remnants of ancient history are juxtaposed with modern Italian fashion: pass through the grand Roman gate and take a stroll amidst the stylish boutiques. Grab a pistachio gelato while you’re at it.

Aperativo hour? Don’t dare leave Verona without sampling their Aperol Spritz. This refreshing punch, flavoured with bitter orange and rhubarb, is the go-to aperativo in the Veneto region. Head over to the trendy Piazza Erbe, and sample this cocktail for yourself. At just 3 euros a glass, how could you not?
